As my second batch of homebrew, with a pale ale now behind, I wanted more hop flavor for my brew day. While at More Beer, I was looking at a clone beer, but decided to go with their experimental IPA. This would allow me to select the hops and yeast to be used in the beer. I decide to brew this batch as a 100%, all Mosaic hopped IPA, which was double dry hopped Mosaic hops and using Imperial Yeast A01. This home-brew has been named Switch 61 Cranked and Clamped, in honor of those train operators who operate the test trains at the Hayward Test Track.

On Friday, July 6 when I walked in from work I had put two bottles of Switch 61 Cranked and Clamped in the refrigerator to chill. Just eight days after bottling, I wanted to take that first sip and see how this homebrew turned out. Anticipation was running high for this beer, more than the pale ale I brewed a month earlier.

This time around I was looking for more flavor from the hops. However, I feel I missed the boat, so to speak, as the decision to use Mosaic in this single hopped IPA didn’t create the sort of juicy fruit flavor I was intending. All was not lost, as the smell was excellent when the cap was popped. The flavor was good, which I was pleased with, but it will be my friends, avid beer drinkers who love a good craft beer to be the real voice behind this beer.

I take JC’s reviews at face value, since he’s an avid wine, as well as beer aficionado, I look forward to his reviews on my homebrew. He does agree there is an absence of fruit, which was somewhat unexpected. Decided to post a thread over on Homebrew Talk Forums and here was how the replies went. Received some excellent information and will look at integrating these the next time I try this recipe.

As the Four Brewers would say, “brew the shit out of it!” Cheers!

Tasting Notes

Here we go: pine, winter melon, dough, caramel smell. Perfect carbonation with the slightest of slight fizz on the tongue. Soft toasted malt flavors with slight sweetness from malt. Balanced hop bitterness with a little spice and herbs going down. I agree, not juicy at all but compares to a Sierra Nevada style IPA. I think it’s excellent. I’d drink it again…I’m impressed. Hidden talent you have. Totally honest review.
