Atascadero, Round One: Wild Fields Brewhouse

The last two weeks I’ve been able to review two more breweries in SLO County. After finishing off Paso Robles, I headed south to “A-Town” — otherwise known as Atascadero.

Last Sunday, we checked out a car show at Lake Park, then headed over to Wild Fields Brewhouse at 6907 El Camino Real, Suite C. You can’t miss the colorful electric sign as you drive up. It was mid-afternoon and not overly crowded when we arrived. We looked over the tap list with Ryan, one of the owners and brewer of the beer, who walked us through his recommendations before we settled into a booth with two flights.

I was impressed with everything I tried — quality in every sip. My flight included Windswept Fields (German pilsner), Three Bridges (American brown ale), 4101 (hoppy pale ale), and License to Fill (West Coast IPA). My girlfriend had Atascadero Beach (Mexican lager), Porch Drinkin’ (pale ale), Oktoberfest (Märzen), and Mouse Rock (IPA). A well-rounded lineup from 20 beers on tap.

Unfortunately, Learning to Fly — an IPA someone recommended — was only available in cans. So in addition to our eight tasters, we walked out with two cans: Learning to Fly and Cloudbreak.

Definitely a spot I’ll plan on coming back to — in fact, I already made a second trip down to buy a 4-pack of Learning to Fly and grab a pint of Pine Mountain Monolith, an award-winning English brown ale. It was a great beer!
