Tasting Notes
Appearance
Deep amber to copper, clear with fine carbonation and an off-white head. The dark-roasted Munich malt showing in the color — richer and darker than the pale golden Festbier, immediately signaling the traditional Märzen approach.
Aroma
Malty and straightforward — imported Munich malt delivering a warm caramel and bready character. The Hallertau hop presence is gentle at 25 IBU, a faint herbal note underneath the malt. Approachable and seasonal in character without complexity or depth that rewards extended nosing.
Palate
A little malty and not too heavy — the most efficient accurate field summary. The Munich malt caramel carries through the middle in a clean but uncomplicated way, the Hallertau bitterness providing a light counterpoint on the back half. Drinkable and inoffensive, missing the depth and character of a German-brewed Märzen but competent in the basic parameters of the style.
Finish
Short, clean, and malty. The caramel resolves with a gentle hop bitterness and nothing lingering. Completes without distinction — the honest assessment.
The Verdict
The familiar TJ's Märzen — darker, maltier, and more traditional in format than the Flensburger Festbier, but less accomplished in execution. A malty, drinkable seasonal that earns its place in the shopping cart without demanding attention. Get both and compare. The Flensburger wins.
