Tasting Notes
Appearance
Deep amber to dark mahogany, clear with fine carbonation and a creamy tan head. Looks richer and darker than the typical Mexican lager — the color alone signals that something different is happening in the glass. Significantly more beautiful in the bottle than a can.
Aroma
Toasted Munich malt leads — warm bread crust, light caramel, a hint of chocolate that never tips into roast territory. The hop character is minimal at 16 IBU, just a faint herbal note in the background keeping the sweetness in check. Clean and inviting, distinctly malt-forward without being heavy or cloying.
Palate
Medium-light body with a smooth, clean mouthfeel that reflects the lager tradition at its most polished. The toasty malt sweetness carries through the middle — light caramel, subtle bread, a faint toffee quality — without the coffee or dark chocolate bitterness that a stout or porter would deliver. This is a dark beer that drinks light, which is exactly the Munich dunkel promise. The 16 IBU bitterness is barely perceptible — this beer lives in its malt character.
Finish
Clean, dry, and short — the light finish Grupo Modelo specifically promises. The toasty malt sweetness resolves quickly and cleanly, leaving no heaviness or residual roast. It's the finish that makes this so deceptively easy to drink and so consistently paired with food — the clean close works with everything from tacos to pizza to grilled meats without interfering.
The Verdict
Modelo Negra is the dark lager that converts people who think they don't like dark beer. Rich taste, light finish — Grupo Modelo's own four words, and they're accurate. German roots, Mexican soul, universal appeal.
