Tasting Notes
Appearance
Golden to pale amber with a slight unfiltered haze and a persistent white foam head. Looks warm and inviting before anything else happens — the honey and malt character beginning visually in the glass.
Aroma
Honey and fresh malt lead — warm, bready, and distinctly German. The unfiltered quality giving the malt aroma a roundness and depth that filtered Festbiers lack. A gentle noble hop herbal note underneath providing structure. Clean and entirely appropriate for the season.
Palate
Smooth but with flavor — the Festbier format at its most approachable. Honey malt character through the middle with a rounded, slightly sweet Munich malt quality. Unfiltered texture giving the palate a creamier, more complete mouthfeel. Super chuggable at 6.2% ABV without sacrificing the character that makes German lager worth drinking.
Finish
Clean, dry, and short. The malt sweetness resolving completely with a gentle noble hop bitterness fading last. Completely refreshing. Makes the next one automatic.
The Verdict
Flensburger Brauerei making a proper German Festbier for Trader Joe's at $2 a can — honey and malt, unfiltered, smooth, chuggable, 6.2% ABV. One of the best contract brews in the grocery store seasonal rotation. Pick up a six pack. Pick up two.
