Tasting Notes
Appearance
Pale golden, brilliantly clear with fine persistent carbonation and a white head. Chuckanut's German lager tradition producing the luminous, clean presentation the Helles style demands. Looks lighter and more delicate than a Pilsner — which it is, intentionally.
Aroma
Bready malt leads immediately and unmistakably — warm grain, a faint sweetness, and the soft, slightly honeyed quality that Bavarian Pilsner malt produces in a well-made Helles. The hop character at 20 IBU is minimal on the nose — just a faint herbal note that signals structure without asserting itself. This is what Chuckanut means by the main highlight being its bready malty character. Clean, honest, and distinctly not a hop-forward beer.
Palate
More full-bodied than a Pilsner, as the style description promises — the Helles grain bill producing a rounder, more substantial mouthfeel that makes the 5% ABV feel complete rather than thin. The bready malt sweetness carries through the middle with a warm, slightly honeyed quality, the 20 IBU bitterness arriving as a clean, gentle counterpoint on the back half.
Finish
Short, clean, and lightly dry. The malt sweetness and faint herbal hop note resolve together quickly and completely, leaving the palate refreshed and ready. The kind of finish that explains why Bavarian workers used to crack a Helles before the morning shift — there's nothing here that demands attention, and everything here that delivers satisfaction.
The Verdict
Chuckanut built the most authentic Bavarian Helles in the Pacific Northwest and took home GABF Gold for it in 2011 before the American craft lager renaissance made that fashionable. Bready, malty, balanced, full-bodied, easy-drinking — liquid bread from Bellingham, Washington. They nailed it.
