Appearance Deep chestnut brown with ruby highlights when held to light, moderate off-white head. Clear and inviting.
Aroma Malt leads entirely — chocolate, toasted grain, a hint of caramel sweetness. The Nugget hops add a subtle earthy, herbal background note that keeps the aroma from going purely sweet.
Palate Medium body with a malty-sweet opening. The chocolate and caramel land first, followed by a nutty, almost biscuity mid-palate that's the hallmark of a well-made brown ale. The 24 IBU from the Nugget hops provides enough bittering to balance the malt sweetness without pulling the beer toward hoppy territory.
Finish Clean and medium-dry. The bitterness from the Nugget hops lingers just long enough to keep each sip from feeling heavy, making this more drinkable than its malt profile might suggest.

Cal Coast keeps it classic with this one. The Brown is a malt-first beer, and Nugget is exactly the right hop for it — a high-alpha bittering hop with a clean, herbal, slightly woody character that supports the malt without competing with it. No citrus, no tropical fruit, no drama. Just a well-built brown ale doing what a brown ale is supposed to do. Comforting — especially on a cooler Paso Robles evening.
